The Town Hall of Cartaya inaugurates experimental bus for the municipality

New bus for Cartaya

With the objective to promote and to check at the same time the itinerary of the new urban bus, that was inaugurated last month by the Town Hall of Cartaya, the Mayor of this locality, Juan Antonio Millán, boarded the bus and travelled part of its route accompanied by the Councillor of Services, Bernardino Marañon.

During the bus route, which at present is free due to its experimental nature since its timetable, itineraries, prices and special discounts for certain groups has not yet been concluded, the Mayor highlighted "this new public service that has been set up to improve the municipalities transport, is not merely a bus route for the town of Cartaya. What we are trying to achieve, fundamentally, is to connect the different urban nucleuses of the municipality together: Cartaya, El Rompido and Nuevo Portil".

Mr Millán also described the different itineraries and timetables that at present were being used, highlighting, firstly, the route that had been especially designed to cover the needs of the workers that each morning had to make their way to work to the other nucleuses of the municipality; secondly, its circular route via Cartaya; and thirdly, which he described as a normal service, covering various points such as schools, medical centres, the town market, hotels and beaches.

For the provision of this new local transport service, the town hall had acquired a new bus, totally adapted for disabled people.

A special card has also been foreseen to be issued in order to provide this service to particular groups such as pensioners. Mr Millán also insisted that "the location of the different teaching institutions (i.e. schools and colleges) as well as their start and finishing times is being taken into consideration when it comes to finalising the route and the timetable for this new service, so that the students and employees can benefit from this service".

Lastly, the Mayor also wanted to appeal to the citizens to contribute suggestions and proposals "as the bus service is still in its preliminary stage of experiment". He also emphasized how important this excellent system would be for the visitors who were lodged at the hotels of the locality, in order to travel into Cartaya to do their shopping, which in turn would benefit the local businesses". Town Hall of Cartaya and the University of Huelva will focus on gender violence at the beginning of the next academic year

During a meeting held in Cartaya against gender violence, which was chaired by Cartaya's Mayor, Juan Antonio Millán and attended by Ayamonte and Huelva's magistrate judges for gender violence, Jaime David Fernández Sosbilla and Francisco Javier Ramírez Herves, as well as public prosecutors, representatives of the local police and the civil guard from the locality, it was agreed that this topic would become the focus at the beginning of the next academic year (in autumn).

With this, and as the Mayor highlighted once the encounter ended, for this year the topic has already been accepted by the University of Huelva and the Culture Department from the Town Hall of Cartaya has already started to work on the programmes and its contents.

An agreement was also reached with the provincial delegations of education and health care for the commencement of lectures on awareness, prevention and detection of gender violence in health care and other educational institutions. Thus, in the educational field, they will focus on the topic "sex equality" taught either directly to the pupils or to the teachers so they in turn can teach the subject. In the health care field, training will be administered to personnel in order to detect and diagnose gender violence at an early stage. Source: The Oracle Costa de la Luz

Cartaya sends 7,000 kilos of food to the Sahara

The members of the Cartaya Association of Friends of the Saharans showed their satisfaction for the work carried out and above all their gratefulness to the town of Cartaya for their solidarity, whilst the lorry was being loaded with 7,000 kilos of food gathered in the campaign “Feed a Hope”.

Nevertheless, and even though this time they did not exceed last year’s figure of 7,500 kilos that nominated Cartaya as the town from Huelva most sympathetic with the Saharan refugees, the president of this association from Cartaya, Guadalupe Camacho, assured that “these 7,000 kilos of food supposed a great help for a needy population such as the Saharans”.

As well as the 7,000 kilos of non perishable food, Cartaya also shipped in the same lorry a very large quantity of school material, medical supplies, toys and 25 blankets, all provided by the Federation of Associations of Friends of the Saharans, and various hundreds of pairs of new shoes donated by various shoe shops from the town.

The caravan of vehicles from the campaign ‘Feed a Hope’, formed this year by five lorries, an ambulance and a microbus, all transporting the humanitarian help obtained in all the municipalities of the province destined for Western Sahara, will depart towards the port of Valencia and from there embark towards Oran. Subsequently, the caravan will travel by road towards the Algerian city of Tinduz, where the supplies will be handed over to the Red Cross, known in this region as the “Red Half Moon”, so that it can be distributed to the Saharan refugee camps. 20 students finish course in English focused on customer service

The Town Hall of Cartaya organised a course in English focused on customer service. It took place between the 6th November 2006 the 10th January 2007 , a total of 234 hours, where 20 students, in all, attended. The objective of this course was to improve the language level and skills in order to maintain a fluid dialogue and a good understanding of the English language, so as to increase their chances of job employment especially in the tourist sector.

The Mayor of Cartaya, Juan Antonio Millán, wanted to encourage the students, during the closing ceremony and handing over of diplomas, to continue with their language studies because, according to him, "those professionals who learn languages have a guaranteed future here in Cartaya, thanks to the remarkable tourist development that this sector is experiencing at present in Cartaya". He also highlighted that the tourism sector will create more stable employment for Cartaya "as we are working not only towards our hotel complexes being open all year round but also that these can also rely on clients during the winter months".

On another matter, the Mayor also emphasized again the peak in this sector as he stated that "two new tourist projects are being approved in the municipality, which will include 7 hotels and 2 new golf courses, widening the choice for tourists. This will undoubtedly require more qualified employees within this sector". Source: The Oracle Costa de la Luz

Summer on the Costa de la Luz

In a sheltered corner of the Costa de la Luz on the western coast of there is a wide sandy-beached bay embracing gentle waves from the Atlantic.

Inland, beyond the beach dunes are fragrant pine forests. In between the beach and the woods, snakes a sinuous green golf course. Set in open spaces amongst the trees are white painted townhouses and villas with terracotta rooftops, green gardens, blue pools and Said courtyards. This is where happy holidaymakers gather with friends and family in the summer to soak up the blissful atmosphere, day after long golden day.

A bouncy melody plays; a young woman answers a phone and passes it to a small boy of about six. Accomplished in its use, he paces up and down while talking. ‘Yes the sun shines every day.

And every day we do the same thing. We walk to the beach in the morning and we swim and we collect hundreds of shells and we make castles and dig holes. And we ride the waves on our boggie boards. And we catch teeny little crabs and little tadpole things and we scoop them back into the sea. On the way home we have ice cream and Mummy buys hot fresh bread and we break bits off to eat while we are walking. When we get home we swim in the pool and then we eat watermelon on the patio and then we play and then we swim in the pool again.

And then we go walking around the market stalls and then we eat again and then we go to sleep.

When are you coming here too?

Yes I am wearing my hat. Yes I am being good. Acshally I have to go now. Is it still raining where you are?’

Nature has bestowed rich gifts on this place called Nuevo Portil, near to the villages of El Rompido to the west and El Portil to the east, close to the towns of Cartaya and Punta Umbria, in the province of Huelva. Spanish people from Madrid, Seville, Huelva City, and some of those who work year-round on the Costa del Sol, make their way here like swallows, to fly free, for the endless weeks of high summer. Recently international holidaymakers have been welcomed too, and now you can hear the lilt of other languages – English, Dutch, French, German, Russian, Italian, Swedish, Romanian and Portuguese, amongst the laughing, rowdy sounds of Spanish. Cuisine from other countries is adding variety to the renowned locallycaught fresh fish and seafood dishes, pork, jamón and chorizo, tomatoes, strawberries, oranges, olives and grapes of the Costa de la Luz.

At the forefront of this culinary expansion is passionate cook, entrepreneur and sailor, Pedro Martínez. Working relentlessly with a strong team, he turns dreams into reality. This summer he has opened the fine Italian restaurant, La Passerella, at the El Rompido marina, with tall Tomas Foster as Maitre’D.

Pedro also opened the Crêpes and Fondue Bar next to La Passerella. The already famous Luz de Mar also at the marina draws the ‘cool’ crowd every night. In summer time, at the chiringuito LaRena on the beach between El Rompido and Nuevo Portil, Pedro serves spicy Indian food and music on Thursday nights, Argentinean barbequed steaks and sausages on Friday nights; Saturday night is the time for aromatic lamb couscous with haunting Moroccan music, and on Sundays Pedro goes Mexican. After the meal, the disco begins, moving and shaking until the bleary-eyed dawn calls time.

Good news for all-year-round visitors is that Pedro is bringing flamenco to El Rompido. Be there on Friday nights at Luz de Mar at the Marina, from October to Easter. La Passerella, the Italian restaurant, will be open during the cooler months, from Thursdays through to Sundays for lunch-time and evening meals.

There is so much going on here. Golfers are already familiar with the challenges and vistas of the courses at Nuevo Portil and El Rompido and the friendly ambience of the clubhouses at the El Rompido Golf Hotel and the AC Hotel at Nuevo Portil.

There’s much more than just glorious golf courses, beautiful beaches, welcoming restaurants and bars. There are kayak trips up the creeks of the estuary, sundown-cruises, classic yachts and sightseeing cruises, sailing lessons, windsurfing lessons, kite-surfing when the wind is up, go-karting, aquapark fun, tennis, walking and picnicking in the woods or cycling, all done around Nuevo Portil and El Rompido.

Further afield there is much to see and do, even without your own transport, as daytours are run from the local hotels. You can explore Huelva, Punta Umbria, Cartaya, and Lepe - all full of surprises.

You can take a trip to find out about Christopher Columbus by visiting the monastery at La Rabida near Huelva. You can also see impressive replicas of the three caravels that set out to cross the Atlantic in 1492. You can take a safari tour of the Doñana National Park for nature lovers and bird watchers; or go to El Rocío the strange ‘Wild West’ town where millions of pilgrims hold a fiesta in springtime; or visit the steep sea-cliffs near Matalascañas.

At the Rio Tinto Mines you can visit the prize-winning museum and you can take a train through the timeless valleys of history. The medieval Niebla Castle is a must, as are the high mountains of Aracena where wild boar roam, and where you can walk through the underground ‘caves of marvels’ or ‘Grutas Maravillosas’ and have a meal in the friendly white Aracena town. You can go west, to , and visit charming Ayamonte on the way there. You can drive up along the River Guadiana to the town of Alcoutim for lunch, or visit the towns and beaches. Just over one hour northeast of Nuevo Portil, is one of ’s loveliest and liveliest cities, Seville. A memorable trip for a day or even better for a few days, Seville stands tall amongst her southern rivals, Córdoba, Cádiz, Jerez, Málaga and Granada. The age-old city has the largest cathedral in the world. It has the Moorish Alcázar, the Torre d’Oro, gorgeous gardens, museums, art galleries and pretty bridges over the River Guadalquivir.

Explore the Barrio Santa Cruz or Triana with their winding lanes of tapas bars, restaurants and flamenco haunts. Seville can give you sun-dazzled squares, all kinds of exciting shops, orange trees, music, fiestas, ferias and above all, a warm welcome.

An early start can take you to for a day to Jerez – elegant home of sherry and the highspirited Andalucian horse.

You can visit wine cellars and also take in an unforgettable equestrian show. You can visit the beautiful age-old City of Cádiz, said to be the oldest in Europe, and possibly the site of the Lost City of Atlantis.

Travelling further south you can reach Tarifa, where and Africa face each other across the Mediterranean, and from where you can take a ferry for a day trip to Tangier, to be enchanted by the souks and cobbled squares, have coffee in a café and haggle for a carpet.

All these fascinating destinations are within the easy realms of possibility from your holiday base at Nuevo Portil.

A holiday in can sometimes be called a cliché.

A cliché is a phrase that is wellworn; over-familiar perhaps.

Think of some you have heard about : ‘ is Different’ or ‘ is Everything under the Sun’ or ‘Smile – you’re in ’. Let others worry about clichés. You’re under the sun in , you feel different and everybody is smiling.
